Tristan und Isolde - Santa Fe Opera

Huntsmen

Jesse Campbell as Huntsman

Three different teams were assigned one of the three huntsmen and each costume was a team effort. Each piece of the garment was quilted by a different apprentice or stitcher, as the quilting was a laborious process taking several hours. Overly large pieces of velvet were laid over stripes of rope and batting, backed by coutille, and then stitched one stripe at a time to create the bubbled effect of the sleeves and unitard. I assisted in the development of this technique, learning to finesse the ridges into shape without stretching the coutille or loosing the curve of the sleeve. My ‘croissant sleeve’ made for the mock-up is shown in the fifth image.  The garments assembled by machine with much effort, and were finished with a variety of heavy-duty closures by the apprentices.
